TIPS TO BUILD ON - WINDSTORM STRAPPING

When building on the Texas Gulf Coast, where windstorms and hurricanes are a common occurrence, it is crucial to ensure that your structure is properly secured to withstand strong winds. Windstorm strapping, also known as hurricane straps or tie-downs, is a key element in fortifying your home against these powerful forces.

Here are some tips for windstorm strapping when building on the Gulf Coast:

  1. Construction in the designated areas, in order to be eligible for windstorm insurance, must be designed by an engineer in accordance with approved methods. These codes dictate the type and placement of clips, anchor bolts, ad hold-downs needed for your structure, depending on your coastal tier or zone.

  2. Use high-quality, corrosion-resistant materials to ensure durability and longevity in the harsh coastal environment.

  3. Install windstorm strapping at key connection points, such as where the roof meets the walls and where the walls meet the foundation, to provide comprehensive support and reinforcement.

By following these tips and taking the necessary precautions, you can help protect your building from the damaging effects of windstorms.
